Together we will explore skills and tactics for sea kayakers wishing to lead others in more challenging conditions.

 

All our advanced sea kayak leadership courses include:

  • Sea kayak leadership skills in advanced sea conditions

  • Excellent pre- and post-course online coaching resources

  • World-class Anglesey sea kayaking venues

  • 1 to 4 coaching ratio

This leadership development course will make the best use of forecast conditions and will include:

  • Boat handling skills in stronger winds and larger waves, in tide races, rock gardens, surf zones

  • Leadership and group management in advanced water – incident management skills

  • Safety and rescue training in advanced water – tide races, rock gardens, surf zones

  • Trip planning and navigation skills – complex trips, tidal vectors, open crossings

  • Night navigation and group leadership exercise

British Canoeing:

British Canoeing no longer require formal training to attend an Advanced Sea Kayak Leader Assessment – course attendance is optional. We provide excellent coaching experiences that will develop your sea kayak leadership skills, regardless of any future assessment goals. This is not an ‘assessment preparation’ course, although we will explore skills and experience for successful candidates at this level.

Is this sea kayaking course for me?

  • Sea kayaking is a physical activity in a dynamic outdoor environment. You should be able to maintain moderate aerobic activity for up to 6 hours each day.

  • You must be a confident and capable sea kayaker in sea conditions dynamic coastal conditions including wind strengths above 16kts+, open water waves above 1.5m, and tidal streams above 3kts - tide races, overfalls and surf zones up to 1.5m.

  • All participants must be over 18 years of age.

Kayaks & Kit

See below for a list of essential kit and suggested personal items for this course.

Most participants prefer to use their own sea kayak and kit for our sea kayaking courses. Please advise us when completing your online booking form if you require the use of a kayak, paddle or other kit. Kayak rentals are an additional £10 per person, per day.

Essential Kit

  • Dry suit or wetsuit & paddling jacket

  • Synthetic or wool base layers

  • Neoprene boots or old grippy trainers

  • Buoyancy aid (PFD)

  • Neoprene spraydeck

  • Helmet

  • Paddle

Personal Items

  • Dry bags for personal items

  • Hat & spare layers

  • Cap, sunglasses & sunscreen

  • Lunch, snacks & water

  • Small first aid kit with any personal medication

  • Towel & change of clothes for the end of the day

Meeting Time & Place
