Dynamic Water vs Rough Water - what’s the difference?

Our Intro to Dynamic Water sea kayaking course is aimed at sea kayakers seeking a progressive introduction to dynamic water paddling. If you’re looking for greater confidence in moderate winds, waves and tides, this course will introduce kayaking skills and tactics to build your ability and experience.

To attend this course, it’s not necessary to be able to roll. We’ll help you to develop your skills and confidence in open sea conditions.

Our Dynamic Water Development course is ideal for sea kayakers who already have some experience in moderate winds, waves and tides. We’ll coach you in these conditions to enhance your skills and confidence, with a focus on friendly tide races, surf zones, rock gardens, and open water wind and waves.

Rolling skills in moderate water are not essential to attend this course. However, you should already be comfortable balancing and manoeuvring in open sea conditions.

Our Rough Water Skills I course is for established sea kayakers already comfortable in moderate dynamic water. We’ll provide excellent coaching in Anglesey’s advanced conditions. We’ll focus on tide race skills and tactics, including ocean white water skills, catching waves and safety considerations. We’ll also develop your surf zone skills, rock garden tactics, and downwind paddling in stormy weather.

To attend this course, it’s helpful to have rolling skills and kayaking confidence in moderate dynamic water with a desire to encounter more challenging conditions.

Our Rough Water Skills II course is for capable sea kayakers already comfortable in advanced sea conditions, and with previous tide race paddling experience. We’ll tackle Anglesey’s dynamic waters on larger tidal ranges, refining rough water skills in fast flowing turbulent environments.

To attend this course, you’ll need a reliable roll (see course details) and an aim to enhance your existing rough water skills. If you’re uncertain of your readiness to attend this course, contact us for further advice.
