Our Approach

Skills - Adventure - Exploration - Immersion - Play

What sets Flow State Adventures apart?

Our sea kayak coaching days involve time spent on, in and close to the water. We love dynamic water kayaking and take an immersive approach to our adventures - we encourage an explorative approach to skill development, building confidence through positive experiences.

We’re delighted to take a swim in surf zones, or beneath sea cliffs - to develop an appreciation of the ocean’s power, and how we can safely interact with wind and waves. We adopt a respectful, playful approach to the paddling environment.

Together we’ll develop your kayaking skills, confidence and experience in dynamic water. From early steps to expert challenges, take your sea kayaking to the next level with us. Come join us for a fantastic experience!

Our Sea Kayaks & Kit

We prefer manoeuvrable sea kayaks, around 16ft / 485cm in length - designed to be capable in dynamic water, stable and seaworthy in wind and waves perfect among rocks and moving water.

Our comfortable kayaks for exploration, adventure and skill development. We also use relatively short high angle paddles, combined with clothing and safety equipment well-suited for adventure days in dynamic coastal environments.

What do the terms ‘moderate’ and ‘advanced’ conditions mean?

Sheltered Water

Slow moving rivers where you could kayak upstream against the flow - lakes and bays no more than 200m wide. Wind strength not exceeding 10kts - slow-moving protected tidal estuaries. Our Discover Adventure Kayaking course will build on your previous experience in these conditions.

Moderate Water

Sea: Wind strength not exceeding 16kts, open water waves up to 1.5m, tidal streams up to 2kts and surf up to 1m high. Many of our adventure and sea kayaking courses will develop your experience and confidence in these conditions.

White Water: If you have grade 2(3) white water kayaking skills, you’ll likely be happy to experience sea kayaking in ‘moderate’ conditions.

Advanced Water

Sea: Wind strengths above 16kts+, open water waves above 1.5m, and tidal streams above 3kts - tide races, overfalls and surf zones up to 1.5m. Our more advanced adventure and sea kayaking courses will develop skills in these conditions, according to your experience and confidence.

White Water: If you have grade 4+ white water kayaking skills, you’ll likely be happy to experience sea kayaking in ‘advanced’ conditions.
