FAQs & Resources

Local Conditions

Where can I find weather, tide and surf information for Anglesey?

Where can I find a map or chart of Anglesey?

We will provide maps and charts for participant use during our courses. If you would like to purchase your own resource, we recommend the OS Landranger map listed above.

What is a tide race?

A tide race or tidal rapid is a natural occurrence whereby a fast-moving tide passes through a constriction or over an underwater obstruction, resulting in the formation of waves, eddies and strong currents. The result can feel similar to a rapid on a river!

What is rock hopping?

Rock hopping (or rock gardening as it is referred to across the pond) is a type of paddling unique to rocky shorelines. Here, the sea state or ocean swell flows over, around and through rock features creating a fun and exciting playground for kayakers!

Logistics

When do the courses begin and end?

We typically meet each morning at 9:00 AM and continue until approximately 5:00 PM. Occasionally, we start earlier or finish later according to course aims, tide times and weather concerns. We will discuss and agree timings before each coaching day.

Where do we meet?

Depending on weather and conditions, our adventure will begin in Holyhead or Menai Bridge. We will confirm our initial meeting place 48 hours prior to the start of the course.

Do you provide transport?

After your arrival in North Wales, we may be able to offer transport to/from our kayaking venues. Please advise us when completing your online booking form if you will not have your own vehicle during your course.

Can you recommend accommodation?

Yes, of course! Please visit our Travel & Accommodation page. Anglesey and neighboring Gwynedd have a variety of accommodation options available from boutique inns to coastal campgrounds.

Kayaks & Kit

Do you provide kayaks and kit for your courses?

Kayaks and kit are not provided for our courses. We find that most participants prefer to use their own sea kayak.

For an additional £15 per person, per day, we can provide a kayak for your course. Please advise us when completing your online booking form if you require the use of a kayak, paddle or other kit.

Whether participants use one of our kayaks or their own, we have a kayak trailer with the capacity to transport eight to ten kayaks.

What other kit will I need?

Please visit the following links for our recommended kit list as well as other important course information.

Age & Fitness

What is the age limit for your courses?

Participants must be 18 years of age or older for one of our scheduled courses. We welcome minors (ages 13 to 17) accompanied by a parent on our bespoke courses.

How fit do I need to be?

Flow State Adventures courses are high energy! Participants must be able to sustain full days of moderate aerobic activity for the duration of their 2-day or 4-day course. Think four to six hours hill walking or cycling. Participants must also be able to sit upright on the floor without the assistance of back support. If you are concerned about your fitness level, please contact us prior to booking.

Do I need to be able to swim?

Our courses require participants to be water confident. If you are concerned about your swimming ability, please contact us prior to booking.

International Visitors

Can you accommodate international kayakers on your courses?

Yes, definitely! We have many years of experience guiding and coaching visiting international kayakers in North Wales. We’ve worked with kayakers from continental Europe, Scandinavia, North and South America, and many other parts of the world. We’re keen to add new countries to our list!

We have an immense amount of experience kayaking with groups on the coastline of Anglesey and the Llŷn peninsula, and on the rivers of Snowdonia. We’ll make best use of the conditions and will always find good places to play.

Do you have any recommendations for traveling to North Wales?

If traveling alone, we recommend using the UK rail network to arrive on Anglesey from Manchester Airport. If you are traveling from Dublin, we recommend either the Irish Ferries or Stena Line from Dublin to Holyhead.

For groups of two or more, it can be cost-effective to rent a vehicle in the UK for the duration of your stay. There are plenty of vehicle rental options at Manchester airport, and a local agency in the Holyhead area.

Can you provide transport after my arrival in North Wales?

After your arrival in North Wales, we may be able to offer transport to/from our kayaking venues. Please advise us when completing your online booking form if you will not have your own vehicle during your course.

Do you provide kayaks and kit for your courses?

Kayaks and kit are not provided for our courses. For an additional £15 per person, per day, we can provide a kayak for your course.

We recommend that you bring as much personal kit with you as possible. Please advise us when completing your online booking form if you require the use of a kayak, paddle or other kit.
